There is this holiday in Hungary in February when the entire country gets together to scare away winter. There are these masks that everyone where at celebrations and you dance and yell to scare away winter. For us at the preschool it meant an all day party. On Thursday the kids came in costumes, similarly like for Halloween you can dress up as anything you want, and they partied all day. One of the attractions that day is a game where you have to eat a spoon of jelly off of a plate without using your hands. The traditional dish of the day are small doughnuts, which were delicious! And so there was plenty of food and drink that day. Before lunch all the kids got something to make noise with, whether it was an instrument or small pots and spatulas to hit with, and we went outside to make some noise. Literally, for one minute, the kids stood there and yelled and hit the pots and played the instruments to make as much noise and scare away winter. We adults laughed that it has been so warm the past few days that winter went away on its own, but the kids either way had a fun day.

Narty w Austrii / Skiing in Austria
It started to get warm in Europe, but before all of the snow melted we decided to go skiing. The plan was to go to Austria, ski all day Saturday and return to Budapest in the evening. We gathered about 16 people, of which I only knew about half from my work. On Wednesday we talked to our friends that they would take us on Friday to rent our skiis and then we would both go to our co-workers to spend the night and be off to Austria Saturday, but those plans changed a bit. On Wednesday evening, when were are our fitness training, Liz fell down and twisted her knee. After a trip to the hospital and a confirmation that it is just stretched and not broken, Liz got a brace. So there was no option for her to come with us Saturday. Despite the change in crew, the rest of us gathered at 5:40 on Saturday morning to pack into two small buses and go skiing. I had never skied before in my life, and other than a few years of snowboarding I knew nothing. Luckily everyone from work got together and taught me. It felt very nice because there wasn't a moment all day when I was alone. First we learned to walk on flat ground, then a little skiing on a small hill, and then we went to the top. The view was incredible although there wasn't too much snow. After many attempts mixed with falls and tumbles, it finally clicked. In a moment it became obvious how I need to move my legs and trust that the boots will hold me. And so after one full day I learned how to ski :) And I'm ready to go again!
