Mi a foklalg....wait what??

While we were still in the hostel, every morning we had an hour of Hungarian to learn. It seems like not much but it really gave you a headache. Our teacher was a Hungarian Linguist, which in theory should make the class easier, but it didn't. The teacher was really good, but it was just too much for the first few days. I learned a few helpful things during these few days though, such as how to say my name, that I am a teacher, and that I am Polish and American. For those that don't know, "Én Kasia vagyok" means "My name is Kate", "Én tanár vagyok" means "I am a teacher", and "Én amerikai és lengyel vagyok" means "I am American and Polish" which explains the title of my blog, if you haven't already figured that out. Other than that I know only a few more words here and there. I know that the way you speak Hungarian is the way you write it which makes reading things a little easier. It allows me to wander the city and be able to read what I see around me. That of course doesn't mean I understand what I am reading, but at least I can read it which is nice :) On my quest to understand this langauge and to be able to experience this culture fully, I signed up for a language class with my new friend Darcy. The class started the first Tuesday I worked, it's only once a week, for an hour and a half each class but the teacher is amazing! I have only had one class so far but I already see that it will be worth while :) Now we shall see just how much I learn and can say by the end of the year ;)

Podczas kiedy jeszcze byliśmy w hostelu, codziennie rano mieliśmy godzine nauki języka węgierskiego. Wydaje się że to nie dużo, ale to naprawdę mogło Ci dać ból głowy. Nasza nauczycielka była lingwistką, co teoretycznie powinno ułatwić lekcje, ale tak to nie wyszło. Nauczycielka była dobra, ale to było po prosty za dużo na pierwsze kilka dni. Nauczyłam się kilka pomocnych zdań przez te kilka dni, jak na przykład powiedzieć jak się nazywam, że jestem nauczycielką, i że jestem amerykanką i polką. Dla tych którzy nie wiedzą, "Én Kasia vagyok" oznacza "Nazywam się Kasia, "Én tanár vagyok" oznacza "Jestem nauczycielką," i "Én amerikai és lengyel vagyok" oznacza "Jestem amerykanką i polką," co tłumaczy tytuł mojego bloga, jeżeli jeszcze nie było to wiadome. Oprócz tego to znam tylko kilka innych słów tu i tam. Wiem że mówi się po węgiersku tak jak się pisze co ułatwia czytanie. Pozwala mi to na to że mogę łazić po mieście i czytać co widzę wokół mnie. To oczywiście nie oznacza że rozumiem to czytam, ale przynajmiej mogę to przeczytać, i to jest miłe uczucie :) W mojej podróży do zrozumienia tego języka i do pełnej imersji w kulturze, zapisałam się na kurs języka węgierskiego z moją nową koleżanką Darcy. Kurs zaczał się w pierwszy wtorek mojej pracy, jest tylko raz w tygodniu przez półtorej godziny, ale nauczycielka jest super! Na razie miałam zaledwie jedną lekcje, ale już widzę że warto będzie :) Teraz zobaczymy ile się nauczę  i co będę mogła powiedzieć pod koniec roku ;)
